Default Can you spare a little cheese with my whine?

Maybe I should just stick with Halo, being your typical button mashing 1st person shooter but I'm making the attempt to think outside the maw.

Well, here is my newbious story: I've been playing GW for about two weeks, now a level 13 Ne/Mo with plenty of skills (that I obviously don't know how to use real effectively just yet).

Joined a decent guild, nice people and somewhat helpful and have been cruisin' along until the Frost Gate mission. I employ the AI henchmen, Healer, Archer, Mage (over Cultist & Enchanter), Fighter and Brawler. Being a Necro, I also use Bone Minions, Bone Fiends and even summon my little Fire Imp on ocassion.

However, after 8 or 9 attempts (using different skill combos & strategies) to gear open the three devises to open the Frost Gate, I literally hit the wall and my crew and I wind up overwhelmed and dead.

And I just can't figure out why? Maybe other than I just suck at MMORPG's.

Any sage advice from you experienced folks would be appreciated.

Use the gear lever on one gate mechanism. Wait for the Stone Summit to attack, and deal with them. Then use the gear lever on another gate mechanism. Wait for the Stone Summit, deal with them, and finally use the gear lever on the last mechanism.

If you try them all at once your party may be overwhelmed by red dots.

When playing guild wars be very careful not to fight more than one group of enemies at a time, I beat halo on legendary and can say that being pro about aggro is the number one thing to keep your party from wiping repeatedly.

Also like any RPG there's a fairly steep learning curve, ie, a lot of stuff you need to learn to be any good at game.

What about your guild ? good people are far far better than henchies so ask a few guildies for a hand with the mission.

They could probably advise on improving your build too, if they help you will get better which makes the guild better.

You could look up builds on guildwiki to see what others have done and then alter it to suit you.
Though you will come across many builds that need skills you don't have yet.

As with above posts the same re guild, If you cant get any of them go back in again

as your getting to the part ok when you go in take out all the groups.in the area one group at a time before you open any gate with lever this will give you plenty of time to open 1 gate dispose of that group and so on to make it a little easir on yourself.

So do it that way if you cant go in a group for any reason.

its a good way to learn about agroing to many and will help you as you progress in the story

Yep, Clear the area around the mechanisms, then activate ONE, kill everything that comes along. Rinse and repeat until all 3 have been activated. Easy-peasy!

Thank you all. Perhaps I am a little too quick on opening the mechanisms.

One at a time, and be patient. Some of the summit groups don't come right away. Take your time and this one is easy.

(It's not "the Flood!")

I remember the first time doing the mission, and the quest log (technically "Mission Objectives") does indicate that you need to hurry up before Prince Rurik is overwhelmed. So it's a little misleading, since there's really no rush.

Right ignore the rush part. That always messed me up to at first. I just took my time killing the waves and then moved on. The prince will still be the prince..shhhhh

You didn't supply us with any info about your own stats.
Do you have the best level armor you can have at that point (I think that would be from the armor guy in Yak's bend)?
What skills are you using?
Do you have your attribute points properly distributed?
Are you targeting foes (left-CTRL + skill, etc.) to get the henchmen to concentrate on one target?
What Runes and Inscriptions (if any) are you using on your armor?

30 Armor on all attire, I did add a rune of Superior Soul Reaping to my leggings, added also one other insignia to my head cover which now escapes me, on Attributes = 7 Blood, 7 Death, 7 Soul Reaping and 1 in Curses, Skills = Demonic Flesh, Life Siphon, Shadow Strike, Vampiric Gaze, Vampiric Touch, Bone Fiend, Bone Minions & Resurrection Signet.

I do attempt to focus on Sages and Dolyak Riders.

Superior soul reaping probably hurts your health a fair amount at your level, especially with non-max armour and touch skills. It's OK while demonic flesh is up but if that gets stripped (howlers have strip enchantment) then you make a lovely low-health low-armour target.

By the sounds of it it's just the misleading objectives causing you to open all three gates in a rush that's caused the problem though - I doubt you'd have got this far without more difficulties if the rune/skills/armour were a serious problem.

If you get into more difficulties in later missions then by all means think about getting rid of the sup rune and/or getting your health up with survivor insignias and/or a vigor rune and vitaes and/or health mods on your weapons, and getting rid of touch skills off your bar.

Not much you can do about armour til later in the game. You can get max by changing campaigns when you get to Lion's Arch (not far away) if you have any other campaigns besides Prophecies on your account, otherwise there's a lot of storyline to go before you can get it, but this part of the game was designed for characters without heroes in non-max armour so it's no biggie if you can't.

Well, there's a big part of your problem right there. At this stage of the game you don't want a Superior rune of anything (except Vigor) because of the relative large -75 health hit. I know Minor Soul Reaping is expensive, but you could either use no rune or a Major. Not only that, but you should get at least a Minor Vigor as soon as possible, and put Survivor Insignias on each armor piece as you find/afford them. You could also get Minor Death Magic and Minor Blood Magic to boost your attributes.

Corwen in Ascalon, the crafter in Yak's Bend, and the crafter in Lion's Arch all have the same 30 AL armor (but some different styles). The first place you can get better armor is Beetletun or Bergen Hot Springs.

An Expert or Superior salvage kit will recover the rune, although you risk the chance of losing that armor piece and having to re-craft it.
Alternatively, if you know someone who can get you a Perfect salvage kit from the Eye of the North expansion, you can recover the rune without that risk (although those come expensive, especially for someone like yourself who is relatively new to the game)

Finally the easiest way to change the runes on your armor is to apply another rune to the already runed armor piece. You don't get to retain the original that way, however.

As you progress through the game you'll most likely come to the stage where you have a few sets of armor, set up with different rune combinations to complement different skill sets you use, since it's easier than trying to shuffle the runes round. For the moment, however I'd suggest minor runes for your attributes, and invest in a Vigor, and Survivor insignia,

Thank you Hollygen......

I guess I shouldn't have discarded my starter armor to make room in storage.

ETA - I replaced the Superior Soul Reaping Rune with a Major Blood Magic Rune (affordable) and the Supe is nowhere to be found now. Did I lose or should I say, rune it?

Oh and where do I find Minor Vigor?
